Water Safety Instructor
American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (Swim Instructor) Course. The Water Safety Instructor course will train instructor candidates to teach water safety, including the Basic Water Rescue course, six levels of the Learn-to-Swim program as well as Parent and Child Aquatics. The pricmary focus of the Water Safety Instructor is to teach participants to be safe in, on and around the water.

The purpose of this Instructor Course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the ARC Swimming and Water Safety Program including Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-to-Swim, Adult Swim, Private Lessons, Water Safety Courses (including Safety Training for Swim Coaches) and Water Safety Presentations.
Prerequisites: * Be 16 years old or older.
* Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills:
Level 4:
* Front Crawl - 25 Yards
* Back Crawl - 25 Yards
* Breastroke - 25 Yards
* Elementary Backstroke - 25 Yards
* Sidestroke - 25 Yards
* Butterfly - 15 Yards
* Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
* Tread water for 1 minute
Equipment Needed: Bathing suit, towel, goggles, Notebook, 3 Ring Binder, computer or tablet for eLearning portion of course
What Will Be Covered: The course is broken down into eLearning Coursework, In-person Review Work and Pool Work. Each session will incluede some classroom time and some pool time. There is also one day scheduled for diving related pool work in the City of Gainesville Eastside Pool. There will be assignments to complete as well as the online portion as scheduled between each in-person session. It is estimated at approx 7 hours of self guided material. In this course you will learn how to arrange, plan and execute a proper swim class. There will be a considerable amount of time working on simulations, role play, practice teaching, evaluations and swim skill improvement.
Course Materials: ARC Swimming and Safety Manual, ARC WSI Manual, Whale Tales information and ARC Online Course and Simulator. All materials are included.
Class Schedule: The class will consist of 9 sessions, most of which are held in Scuba Monkey Dive Center's indoor heated pool. One session will be conducted at the Gainesville Eastside pool. Each session will be approx 4 hours long and consist of classroom and pool work.
